Balancing Act Great White Egret
Photograph - Digital Photography
This lone Great White Egret flew in and claimed the coveted fishing spot of several Great Blue Herons along the James River at Lions Bridge in Newport News, Virginia. It was persistent in its hunt for small fish and other tasty morsels in the shallow river water.
I was mesmerized just watching it spring from boulder to boulder in the river; sometimes barely maintaining its balance as it thrust its sharp bill beneath the surface spearing small fish, frogs and small reptiles. It was most stealthy in its ability to stand motionless for long periods of time while allowing the prey to move within striking distance of its bill which it used like a spear.
For two weeks, I returned to the river bank on a consistent basis to capture images of this graceful and magnificent bird.
