Description
A pilgrim or peregrino's back pack and staff are left outside the church of Santuario da Virxe da Barca in Muxia, Coruna, Galicia, Spain. This is one of the places on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela; the Way of St. James the Apostle. Legend has it that St. James stopped here, weary of his travels, spreading the idea of Christianity. The Virgin Mary is said to have come to him in a boat steered by angels as he knelt here on the rocks. The church itself was destroyed by fire on 25th December 2013 from a lightning strike. It had been rebuilt. This was originally a pre-Christian shrine and sacred spot. Pilgrims stop here on their way to Finistere, the last stop on the Camino for those who venture further than Santiago. Because these are fishing villages, pilgrims would take a scallop shell to prove that they had indeed completed the journey. Today the scallop shell is a symbol to be found along the Camino and often tied to pilgrim's back packs.
