Description
One of the highlights of the Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA) is Grand Prismatic Spring. The Grand Prismatic Spring sits on a wide spreading mound so that the water flows evenly all around forming shallow step-like terraces. The brilliant colors found around the thermal features are due to heat-loving bacteria called thermophiles. Different types of thermophiles live at different temperatures and depending on their biology are responsible for the different bands of yellow, green, orange and red-brown seen around the spring. When the flow is not rapid, the pools of water reflect the clouds and the hillsides around the spring.
