Description
In the area where the Castle of Spessa is situated there is only one restaurant, La Tavernetta, located at the foot of the castle hill. Several quaint bars can be found in the nearby hamlet of Capriva while other typical restaurants can be found in Cormons. The small hamlet of Spessa can be reached by coach services, with seats reserved in advance.
The winery, located on the castle grounds, is nestled in a vast park set among undulating hills; its vineyards occupy an area of 30 hectares, all within the prestigious Collio D.O.C. zone. The vineyards, which have an average age of 15 years, thrive on marl-rich soil and are cultivated following traditional methods.
The process of wine-making is carried out in several locations: the winery which utilizes thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks; the ancient castle cellar, with its terra cotta flooring and brick-vaulted ceiling, where the wines are fermented in barrique-type casks; the wine-ageing cellar which actually used to be a military bunker built around 1935, situated under the courtyard in front of the castle. A tunnel which descends 70 steps connects the castle cellar to this underground shelter which has been transformed into a unique wine-aging environment full of mysterious allure.
