Description
This is an image of American lotus. It is very easy to identify the difference between a lotus and a water lily if you know where to look.
In the later season Lotus flowers are normally but not always are out of the water several inches to a foot or more, on a stem, where water lilies are laying right on the water. This image was taken in the spring so that does not help.
Next you look at the leaves surrounding the flowers. on an American or Asian lotus the leaves are mostly rounded and but can have a small indent near where the stems of the leaves attach to the leaf itself. In the case of a water lily the leaves have a sharp and pronounced v shape split in the leaves and you can see the water through the large v split with the flowers laying right on top of the water.
In this case this flower is an American Lotus.
