Title
Afternoon Tea Party
Artist
Steve Henderson
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
Two ladies, in an elegant setting, enjoy an afternoon tea in the perfect venue.
The ladies are not stylish celebrity types, nor is the setting in which they are enjoying their meal one of queenly, Victorian splendor. Actually, it’s all much better than that – a tea party enjoyed as a tea party is meant to be.
Because a tea party, really, is the culmination of a child’s dream – a time of beauty and fantasy and pretend and elegance that is unsullied by the false front of plastic sophistication that we mistake for the real thing. Because children are innocent, not sophisticated, any activity in which they involve themselves with enthusiasm will be real and true and genuine.
Afternoon Tea, the artwork, invites us all to such a tea party. Set in the country on a warm country day, adult and child have dressed in their best, and the happy pink bear adds her own sense of style to the occasion. In the background, among the trees, a cluster of chickens clucks and scratches their way about their daily duties.
The two participants of the tea party are mother and daughter, or aunt and niece, even much older sister with a much younger one, but they are two people who love one another, and the adult is one the child implicitly trusts, and who deserves that trust. To be an adult in such a situation – without expressing any sort of adult condescension that we so unfortunately adopt as a means of interacting toward children – one must retain an element of being a child oneself.
What looks like water in the teapot is actually tea. What look like crackers are watercress sandwiches; the cookie bits are elegant petit fours – things not difficult to believe when one is with a child, and one is at one with the way a child thinks.
Enter into the world of Afternoon Tea, and enter into the world of childhood, where reality has nothing to do with paying bills, or going to work, or trying to be someone we are not.

This is one of your most powerful works Steve! The mother daughter bond is something to behold and to watch them sit and enjoy an afternoon tea under the shade of a tree is just marvelous. A true joy I just sit and soak in with my eyes and, a smile on my face.
