Accented Pussy Willows
Three bunches of pussy willows, a lovely, soft, fluffy sign of spring.
The smaller species of the genus Salix is called pussy willow when their furry catkins are young in early spring. Before the male catkins bloom they are covered in fine, greyish fur. People thought of tiny cats or pussies. The catkins can be seen long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring. The rest of the year trees of most of these species are usually known by their ordinary names, willows or sallows.
