One of the Yupo pieces I created in recent weeks was an intensely colorful abstract, blues and greens in watercolor, running and flowing on Yupo. After the first application was dry, I had spattered droplets of golds and lighter greens and blues on top of the dried watercolor.
When that dried (and sadly, I foolishly didn't capture an image of that stage!), I started using damp cotton makeup remover pads that had a waffle pattern on one side to blot off some of the heaviest areas of color. Once I had done that, I drew an image of butterflies and plants onto the sheet.
Once that was done, I began evaluating just how I wanted to bring the butterflies to life. I realized that the best way was to REMOVE paint from around them, kind of a reverse negative painting. As you may know, in true negative painting, you keep painting AROUND the lighter image in the foreground, making the background darker and darker. In this case, I wanted to keep the patterns and colors within the butterflies and plant parts, so I began REMOVING paint around them, using the makeup pads and cotton swabs to blot and dab and remove and lighten and texturize the background. The nature of Yupo allows this in a way that paper never would!
I finally got to this point, where the butterflies and plant parts are all defined and visible and the lovely colors and textures from the original abstract work on Yupo are showing through. I hope you enjoy it!
