Description
If this small shack could talk! It is part of the remains of Rhyolite Nevada, a short-lived boom town from the late Gold Rush era that was founded in 1904 but dead by 1916! But in 1907-08, the population was between 3500 and 5000 and the town had concrete sidewalks, electric lights, water mains, telephone and telegraph lines, daily and weekly newspapers, a monthly magazine, police and fire departments, a hospital, school, train station and railway depot, at least three banks, a stock exchange, an opera house, an ice plant, a public swimming pool, two churches, and a red light district! Shacks like this one must has crowded the landscape! But like many other boom towns, the high-grade ore in the area began to diminish. Then the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 disrupted rail lines and a financial panic in 1907 combined to hasten the bust. The mine close in 1911 and by 1920, the population was close to zero.
