I will be the first to admit that I do not know for sure that this little flower is an orchid, but it resembles one in so many ways that I will go out on a branch and say it is. It is completely bilaterally symmetrical, has an anther cap, a small rectangular box containing its pollen, hanging down from the inside top of the flower, underneath the lateral sepals (petals). Below all this, the lip of the flower stands out, a drop of water hanging from it.
A few of these beautiful, small, colorful orange wildflowers, maybe an inch across, bloom behind my home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the late summer. If you know they are not orchids, and know what they are, please write me.
For the technically minded, I made this photograph using a Nikon 105mm macro (close-up) lens on a D-300 camera.
