Today i took a walk around one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful and full of scenic wonders that includes the iconic castle rock face that Edinburgh Castle sits upon, not only that there are many beautiful views over the gardens to Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Princes Street Gardens West was once a moat full of water and rubbish that was thrown from within the Old Town walls and was known as the Nor Loch or North Loch.

This marshy wasteland was a natural defence of edinburgh’s old town and in the 15th century King James the third ordered this marshy hollow to be filled with water so as to strengthen the castles defences.

What Princes Street Gardens has now become is a result of Edinburgh expanding to the lands of the North, the gardens where created using the dirt from the groundwork that was being created from the New Town development in around 1810 to create what you now see and love.

Princes Street Gardens East and West became beautiful public gardens for the upper classes to wander, today the gardens are a very popular area not only for the locals, but also the tourists and trust me you cannot avoid a visit.
