Description
Freetown Cristiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous district in the Christianshavn neighborhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. Christiania is a former military base that sat abandoned for many years. In 1971, a group of hippies broke down the barricades and began squatting there. Nowadays, approximately 900 people live in the area, comprising a community that has its own rules and regulations completely independent of the Danish government. The residents of Christiania follow counter-cultural beliefs based in the hippie movement, anarchism, the squatter movement, and collectivism. They fly their own flag, have their own currency, and sing their own anthem. They don’t consider themselves part of Copenhagen, Denmark, or the European Union. Those living in Christiania don’t pay taxes. Approximately 900 people live in the commune, with even second or third generations of families growing up there. Christiania has been famous for many years thanks to the permanent stalls along Pusher Street—or ‘The Green Light District’, as it was once known—that sold all types of cannabis (illegal elsewhere in Denmark).
There aren’t many rules and laws in Christiania, except for a few key ones to note. First, Freetown Christiania is a community free of violence. There are no guns, knives, or bulletproof vests. Also banned from the community: bikers’ colours, hard drugs, and stealing of any kind. Photographs can be taken throughout most of the community but it is best not to take photos of the residents and definitely no photos should be taken at all in the Pusher Street area. If you have any questions whether you can photograph something it would be best to ask. The cannabis trade is alive and doing well in the Pusher Street area. While walking around in that area I saw several tables set up with venders selling their various cannabis products out in the open. There were cannabis plants growing everywhere around the community. There was quite a bit of vibrant street art to see in and around the community. This image shows a bar and some of the street art that can be seen in the Freetown Christiania community.
