Though my wife & I moved back to Austin from Galveston late ‘99, we occasionally got to return to the island when my wife’s work took her there for a convention or such. It was in the mid 2000s, before Hurricane Ike struck, and I was fortunate enough to take a snapshot of this mother and child along the beach, the 61st street pier and late afternoon / early evening sky awash with clouds and air mixing colors like children often do, with abandon and energy oblivious if anyone’s watching or not - nature’s creativity for it’s own sake.
But I happened to be watching, and got lucky :)
I’ve done several slight variations of this scene that’s stuck with me, though this is the only one I’ve still a copy of my painting (water soluble oils).
The original was sold when we returned again later to Galveston for a year and a half stay in 2010, after Hurricane Ike had wiped the pier away. Galveston is indeed beautiful, but it is also an island subject to the sea!
