Description
WOOD ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE
Atlantic Ocean
North of Biddeford Pool, ME
This is Maines last lighthouse to retain its original form. Built in 1858, it is a granite-block conical tower that guards the Saco River, and replaces the original light built in 1808. The light is white and is over 70 feet above the ocean. Visitors can view the light from East Point in Biddeford Pool, ME. It is a delightful walk along the ocean to the areas where the light can be viewed. If one is lucky many shore birds such as the common eiders can be seen from the shore. Note the covered walkway from the keepers house to the tower. This is a necessity in the winter months as the keeper is of course expected to tend to the light in all types of weather.
