Description
Milkweed Sunset: This photograph of a Milkweed Pod was taken in Pomfret Connecticut (Wyndham Land Trust) in November 2014. Common Milkweed is also known as butterfly flower, silkweed, silky swallow-wort, and Virginia silkweed. Milkweed is native to Southern Canada and of much of the Eastern United States. Milkweed prefers sunny sandy areas to grow. The seeds of the Milkweed are long, white flossy hairs. The plant's latex contains large quantities of glycosides which makes the leaves and seed pods toxic to many mammals however the young shoots, young leaves and flower buds and fruits are all edible raw. The floss of the Milkweed was often used by Native Americans for cordage and textiles. Milkweed Oil from the seeds can be used as a sunscreen. Milkweed Plants are very important to our insect population. The larva of the Monarch Butterfly often live on Milkweeds and populations have historically fallen when Milkweeds are eliminated by pesticides.
