Description
The Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, constructed in 1829, was the first lighthouse built on Lake Huron and is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Michigan. The conical stone tower is overlaid with red brick painted white. Now automated, it still serves as a beacon to Great Lakes freighters entering the St. Clair River from Lake Huron. Many thanks for your gracious words of affirmation, Zeana. Very much appreciated.

Thanks, Peggy. It seems like a lot has been done to make the lighthouse attractive and more accessible to visitors. I was the only one wandering around, and yet a man from the well-stocked gift shop came out to greet me!

This is a perfect image, Ann! It is a habit to always look at this lighthouse when I am crossing the border into Port Huron. I will have to drive to it again one of these days, because as you said in another comment, the last time I was close it was not in the best condition.

Nice shot. There's always something special about a lighthouse photo.

Thank you very much for your complimentary response, Lianne. The last time I saw this lighthouse the red brick could be seen in many places beneath pealing paint. I understand that many of the bricks were loose. They now have been repaired and a fresh coat of paint has been applied.
