Beads of water on a spider's web on Billy Goat Trail in Potomac, Maryland. Billy Goat Trail and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail Loop (8 miles) is a popular DC-area hiking trail between the towpath and the Potomac River. It is divided into three trails — A, B, and C — that are adjacent but not contiguous. Each is accessible from the towpath by the canal. Section A is the most popular and challenging and offers mildly strenuous rock scrambles as well as great views from the cliffs above Mather Gorge, which is located downstream from Great Falls. Billy Goat Trail is managed by the National Park Service.
