Description
This is a reproduction of “Roman Soldier at Rest” of 1788 by Francois Xavier Fabre. He was twenty-two years old when he painted this masterpiece having been born in Montpellier, France. He had won the Prix de Rome the previous year. During the French Revolution he lived in Florence where he taught art and became a member of the Florentine Academy. He was romantically involved with the countess of Albany upon whose death in 1824 he inherited her fortune. He set up an art school in Montpellier. When he died in 1837 he donated his art collection to the town and the collection became the foundation of the Musee Fabre. This masterpiece of his early Neoclassical period is an oil on canvas that measures 187.5 by 147 centimeters. It is in the Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France.
