Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) in a marsh in Huntington Beach, California
The Great Blue Heron is a large gray heron, with a large bill and a black crown stripe on a white head. It is the largest heron in North America, often standing silently in marshes, as here, and lakeshores, or flying high with slow wingbeats. Typical habitats include marshes, swamps, shores and tideflats. It forages in calm waters, slow moving lakes/rivers and coastal bays. Forages by standing still, as here, or walking slowly in shallow waters, waiting for fish to swim near and then striking rapidly with the bill.
