Description
This is a view of Fort Watauga from inside. The fort itself is a historic reconstruction of what settlers lived in while under siege by Cherokee Indians. There, approximately 225 men, women and children fled their homes and took refuge inside the stockade building. They repulsed attacks and outlasted the siege, despite the hard conditions and sickness that occurred. After a significant loss by the Indian Chief, Dragging Canoe at the battle of Long Island Flats, the Cherokee retreated. If these settlers hadn't prevailed, our history might be much different than what it is today.
