This is a reproduction of Caravaggio’s “David with the Head of Goliath” of about 1606. This traditional Christian religious scene is quite complicated by the details of Caravaggio’s life. This masterpiece is often compared to the painting of 1610. In this earlier version, Caravaggio shows David in a more triumapant attitude. The head of Goliath is more generic, and less reminiscent of the artist himself. The painting was probably acquired by the conde de Villamedina in Napels between 1611 and 1617. He took it to Spain. The painting measures 90.5 by 116.5 centimeters and is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
