Description
“The first survey of Chicago was made in 1830 by James Thompson, and embraced an area of about three-eighths of a square mile. The Illinois and Michigan Canal Commissioners hired James Thompson, a surveyor from Kaskaskia in downstate Randolph County, to create Chicago’s first plat (or map showing proposed lots) in 1830. He laid out the town with straight streets uniformly 66 feet wide (the length of a surveyor’s chain) with alleys 16 feet wide bisecting each block.” Source: Chicago Historical Society (ICHi-34284)
LaSalle Street was named after French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who may have very been the first European to visit the Chicago area around 1682. It is believed by some that he actually beat famed explorers Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette to the Chicago area. LaSalle explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, the Mississippi River, and the Gulf of Mexico. Further, he claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France.
Prior to the fire of 1871, LaSalle Street had no notable buildings and it wasn’t until late 1880’s that the corner of LaSalle and Jackson would have the foundations built for what it would become architecturally. The building in view (The Rookery) bearing the LaSalle name would become one of the most important buildings for architectural design in Chicago.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
