The Cathedral of Christ the Savior is the tallest Orthodox Christian cathedral in the world. It is 103 metres (338 ft) tall. It was built to commemorate the victory over Napoleon. The erection of the cathedral took 31 years from 1852 till 1883. All the major commanders, regiments, and battles of the Patriotic War of 1812 (with the lists of awards and casualties appended) were listed on the marble plates. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built by the entire Russian nation. It was a visible symbol of Faith, national glory, honor and a witness to many historical events.The cathedral was demolished by dynamiting by Stalin's order in 1931. It took about a year to dispose the debris.Some of the marble from the walls and marble benches from the cathedral were used in nearby Moscow Metro stations. The foundation was transformed into the world's largest open air swimming pool, named Moscow Pool. The cathedral was restored from 1994 to 2000. A pedestrian Patriarch's bridge over the Moscow river was constructed between 2003 and 2004. The cathedral belongs to Moscow government and is rented by Russian Orthodox Church.
