"Heather Bed" - Dexter Cows on Dartmoor Acrylic Painting. This is an acrylic painting of some black dexter cows (cattle) lying down and grazing in the yellow gorse and violet heather found on the high ground that is Dartmoor in Devon, England. The region is full of uniquely beautiful scenes that are furthered in their delightfulness by the animals that roam wild there. This painting captures the moment of walking round a hedge or over the brow of a hill to discover a hidden herd hoping to graze or lie down undisturbed - an experience that feels as if you are the first to visit their territory. Though of course we know that's not true we can at least delight in the fact that these cattle will shortly move on so at the very least we are the only ones to experience this particular moment, this particular arrangement and this particular glimpse of the ever-changing light that blankets the high moors. In the background are rolling green hills with hedgerows and fields and a hint of sunshine and showers in the forthcoming moments. This is a painting one can get lost in, keep the focus of your attention on the detailed head of the cow in the foreground and let your peripheral vision soak up the impressionist and gestural brush strokes of the rest of the painting allowing your brain to transport you to Dartmoor and feel the distance of the hills and the heaviness of the imminent sky.
