About Neal Winfield

I have been painting and drawing all my life and studied glass design and art history at Stourbridge College of Art in the West Midlands, UK.

For a number of years I also ran my own stained glass studio in Cilfynydd, South Wales, where I undertook private commissions, ecclesiastical repair work and designed panels for pubs and bars around the area. Eventually I took a “proper” job but still kept in touch with my art by painting and drawing for recreational purposes.

Around 2000, I decided to return to my creative roots and took the conscious decision to paint and exhibit more and move abroad. I now make a living painting, writing and teaching in central Italy and surprise to say I am a happier man for it.

My work is a representation of the landscape, which exists in the mind but which perfectly reflects the idyllic image people have when they look back on a treasured place or view. The landscapes have all the elements of a location but without the everyday detritus and bric-a-brac.

The style is heavily influenced by the Gothic International and Early Renaissance painters as I love the way they are still experimenting with perspective and colour. The large trees that figure prominently in the works are acknowledgements to these artists and painted in the style of Giotto, Martini, Lorenzetti to maintain the artistic connections to the Italian landscape.

I like encourage this playful exploration and discovery within students work and feel that while skill, ability and technique are important, looking is the primary skill an artist needs to perfect. The hand will interpret what the eye sees.
