Gabriela’s artwork encompasses a multitude of expressions and abstract shapes to create a visual representation of things related to human emotions and elements of nature. Her unique style developed in an original manner expresses philosophical ideas related to human existence and spirituality.
Born in the capital of Romania, her love of art manifested at the age of 4 when she started becoming completely immersed in expressing her passion for colours through the process of drawing. Being a self-taught artist she later studied psychology and finished a degree in social work. After a career as a social worker, she then moved to UK where she took another path following her calling and first love of art. Her view and insight into the human mind is a constant inspiration for her art leading her imagination beyond the realistic representation of shapes and colours.

Personal statement and technique

In the process of painting I like to imagine how the exterior world is interconnected with our mind into a spiritual bond, the flow of energy that connects everything together. A great importance in my work is the mood as my paintings are dictated and guided by momentary emotions using a pallete knife to build layers upon layers of heavy paint. I usually make a preliminary sketch and draft ideas of what I want to represent, but the final work is never keeping its planned form.

Most of my work is done on large-scale canvases using acrylic paint and different mediums to create the transparency or heavy textures I desire. Detailed shading is created using small brushes followed by using larger brushes for the glazing technique. For reference I sometimes use photos but many of my ideas are visions I have during my dreams or in the meditation state.

One of my greatest artistic influences is Vincent Van Gogh to whom I have dedicated some of my paintings. His use movement and bold colours I find absorbing and really resonates with me.

Some of my inspiration has its traces in eastern European culture, from Romanian and Russian writers and philosophers.
“Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love.” (Fyodor Dostoevsky)

Gabriela’s work has also been featured in some of US Art Magazines as well as international art shows.
At present, she is taking her style a step further integrating realistic portraiture into her work, using her abstract designs for painting her backgrounds. “For the realistic portraits, I use a combination of mixed media, professional colouring pencils, pastels and watercolours on thick bristol board paper. In general I love painting children and I like to use vivid colours to express their joy for all the little things in life. “

In the last years, Gabriela is working mainly commissions for the private clientele as well as being involved in some local charity events for helping people in need.
