France contains many old Medieval villages and one of the most charming and beautiful is Yvoire on Lake Geneva. Architectural details like this ivy covered shuttered window lend a charm wonderful in a framed photo.
Yvoire is a tiny medieval town in the department of Haute-Savoie, in the southeastern French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, near Geneva. Situated on the French shores of Lake Geneva, Yvoire is one of France’s most beautiful villages, locally nicknamed the “Pearl of Lake Geneva” (la Perle du Lac Léman). The preserved fortified village is well known for its floral display and has been awarded by the International Trophy for Landscape and Horticulture. Its pedestrianised narrow streets are an invitation for a historic stroll, leading to the calm and tranquil waterfront with splendid views of Lake Geneva, the Alps of Chablais and the Jura Mountains.
Yvoire’s written history goes back to 1306, a time when Lake Geneva castles played an important role in protecting the strategic trade routes through the Alps and along the lake. However, changing trade routes pushed Yvoire into decline and relative obscurity after the sixteenth century, until it's rebirth when the tourists began to arrive. It is especially beautiful in the Spring and Autumn when flowers over over every balcony in the small village.
