Description
A young alligator warms itself sunning on a log in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake Park.
There are two alligator species in the world: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. The American alligator (alligator mississippiensis) can be found in the southeastern United States from North Carolina to eastern Texas. They are most prevalent in Florida and Louisiana with both states having populations of more than one million.
The alligator is found almost exclusively in freshwater, but occassionally is seen in brackish and salt water. Native Floridians assume that if its freshwater, then there is a "gator" in it. That includes people's swimming pools.
They are an apex predator with mature adult males averaging between 10 and 15 feet in length with females reaching a maximum of about 10 feet. Their main prey is fish, turtle, snakes, small animals, and insects for the young, but they are opportunistic feeders and will try to capture anything that isn't bigger than they are when hungry. Keep that in mind.
