Description
YELLOWSTONE GOLDEN EAGLE by PRISCILLA BURGERS
A Golden Eagle is on the lookout for fish in the Madison River at Yellowstone National Park. Golden Eagles are North America's largest bird of prey. They are one of 20 raptor species at Yellowstone National Park. Their population is stable at Yellowstone but it may be declining in other areas of the western U.S. Yellowstone is home to 28 golden eagle territories, each of which corresponds to a nested pair. (Golden eagles are very territorial and will dive bomb to defend their home range.) Twenty-one of these nesting areas are in the northern part of the park where the habitat—semi-open country, high-altitude mountains, and cliff sides—is more suitable to the birds. Golden eagles are grand, majestic animals.10–12 species of animals have been found in golden eagles’ nests, everything from rabbits to pronghorn fawns. Golden eagles are every bit the predator as Yellowstone’s big carnivores. They are the wolves of the sky and are deserving of the attention given to Yellowstone’s other iconic wildlife.
