Description
With the Color of Flame, the translation of 'flamenco,' is where we get Flamingo. In further study of the origin of the word, we find the Latinate Greek term Phoenicopterus, literally "blood red-feathered.
The pink or reddish color of flamingos comes from organic pigments in their diet of animal and plant plankton. A healthy, well-fed flamingo is vibrantly colored; a white or pale flamingo, is usually unhealthy or malnourished. A notable exception are captive flamingos; many turn a pale pink as they are not fed carotene at levels comparable to the wild.
Part of my proceeds from the sales of this image will be donated to Actors & Others For Animals.
