Description
Witches' Sabbath (1798) by Spanish artist Francisco Goya shows the Devil in the form of a large goat adorned with garlands. He is surrounded by a coven of freakish-looking witches in a barren wilderness. A wreath of oak leaves adorns the goat's horns. On the right, an older witch holds a skeletal-looking infant. Above her, a younger woman offers a healthier-looking child.
Back in Goya's day, the Devil was said to eat children and human fetuses. To left of the goat, the artist paints the discarded corpse of an infant. The dead body of an infant can be seen discarded to the left. More dead baby bodies are seen on posts in the background.
A frightful and morbid depiction of the dark side of humanity.
