Description
A Polar Beat waiting on the tundra near Churchill Manitoba for the ice to freeze over on Hudson Bay so he can go out and catch seals - his natural food.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE â In late October/ early November of 2012, I had the pleasure of spending a week in Churchill, Manitoba, on the shore of Hudson Bay. Churchill is located where the Churchill River (fresh water) empties into Hudson Bay (salt water) and as everyone remembers from their High School chemistry class, fresh water freezes at a higher temperature than salt water. This means that the ice will form earlier in winter at Churchill than for miles around. Now Polar bears eat seals almost exclusively and since the previous Spring, the bears have been on-shore where they cannot catch seals and so they have not been eating anything (a sort of âwalking hibernationâ) and they are very anxious for the ice to form so they can catch seals and eat again. The consequence of all this is that every year about 1,000 polar bears gather near Churchill, waiting for ice to form and making it the best place in the world to observe and photograph them.
In Churchill two companies operate oversized specially converted buses on giant tires (called âtundra buggiesâ) that drive over the tundra and make it safe to photograph the undisturbed and unperturbed bears from distances as short as 3 meters. This particular bear was fast asleep, and completely disinterested in us. This image was shot with a Nikon D4 camera equipped with a Nikkor f/2.8 - 70 to 200 mm focal length zoom lens set at 170 mm focal length (and a 2x teleconverter to give an effective focal length of 340 mm). Settings were manual â ISO 100, f/8, 1/259 sec.

Fabulous capture Robert. He looks like he has not a care in the world.
Robert McAlpine replied:
Thank you - no doubt he is dreaming of seals and looking forward to his first meal in months when he can get back on the ice and catch a seal.
