Description
I don’t think there is an accurate count of how many waterfalls there are in Iceland. Perhaps 10,000 give or take a few. This being the Northernmost European Country, it’s climate guarantees plenty of rain or snow year-round. Couple the climate with the fact that the Nordic landscape consists of mountains, plateaus and glaciers that provide drop offs and cliffs for these falls to form and eventually wind their way to the sea.
Geography and climate account for part of the reason for so many falls, one more factor is geology. Iceland sits at the crossroads of tectonic activity between the plates of North America and Europe. The activity is forever changing the landscape.
The Icelandic word for waterfall is foss. They usually have an identifying word that goes with it. For example, this photo is of Godafoss or Waterfall of the Gods. Taken in Northeast Iceland not far from the city of Akureyri at Pingeyjarsveit,
A color version of this photo along many others from this beautiful country may be viewed in my collection titled Iceland here in FAA. Or at jimcookphotography
