Description
The Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga image captured in Costa Rica), is every so often referred to as Snakebird, Darter, American Darter, or Water Turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas.
Not like ducks, the Anhinga is not able to watertight its feathers using oil produced by the uropygial gland. Consequently, feathers can become waterlogged, making the bird barely buoyant.
Then again, this enables it to dive with no trouble and search for underwater prey, such as fish and amphibians. It can stay down for significant periods.
When needed, the Anhinga will dry out its wings and feathers, with the resemblance of the semicircular full-spread shape of its group of tail feathers while drying them out, to that of true meleagrine males lending the name "water turkey" to it.
This shot was taken in the wild from a boat going up the tortuguero river canals deep in the rain forest near a village on the Northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in the Limon Province.
The town is situated on a sand bar island, separated from the mainland by Tortuguero River and bordering the Caribbean Sea.
Tortuguero is legendary for its negotiable canals that flow through the rainforest in the national park, and has such earned the nickname of 'Central America's Amazon'. The guide called it, "A Piece Of Heaven".
