Description
All temples and shrines in Japan have small, stone fountains with ladles perched on top used for purification with water before going inside the Temple or Shrine. The fountain is typically made of stone, with a wooden, triangular roof, and a decorative spout that leads into a pool of water. There are several wooden or metallic ladles perched atop the pool. The ritual consists of washing the left hand, the right hand, mouth, and lastly the handle of the water ladle. The fountain at Senso-ji Buddhist temple in Asakusa area of Tokyo Japan was particularly ornate.
