Description
Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are one of the most beautiful springtime wildflowers in our area. They are ephemeral (which means soon disappearing until the next year), and in spite of the name "bluebells", we hav e them in pink and white as well. The buds begin as this lovely, pale lilac color and the usual flowers turn blue as they open.
Virginia bluebells LOVE moist habitats so you may find them in rich woods where the sun shines, on stream banks, beside ponds, and places that offer enough water. April and May are months to see them.
As they are difficult to transplant successfully, please try to enjoy them where they live. These gorgeous wildflowers are offered for sale through many suppliers. That is the most responsible way to get them into your garden:>)

Carol Senske replied:
Thank you, Bette. They are ephemeral and too soon gone from sight, but they are so welcome when they arrive. Yes, sad to have them for such a short time (until next spring).
