Description
I took this shot of Union Peak mid afternoon of 06/24/20 on a pleasant but cloudy day. The peak seen in the background is Mount McLaughlin, also a member of the Cascade Range of mountains.
Union Peak is the core of what was an old volcano eroded by glaciers during the last Ice Age. It is the most prominent feature in this section of the park, its peak being 7,698 feet above sea level and over 1,000ft above its immediate surroundings.
Union Peak is a heavily eroded shield volcano in the Cascade Range of central Oregon, located along the Cascade Crest less than 7 miles (11.3 km) southwest of the rim of Crater Lake. Ice Age glaciers eroded away most of the flanks of the volcano, leaving numerous deep cirques surrounding a central glacial horn.
