When I take my dog Sunshine for walks at a park near my house, we frequently see this wonderful sight, but I never have my camera with me. Today, after our three mile trek, I decided to drive back over with my camera! Of course, they were nowhere to be seen by then. I stood around, scared several frogs in the marshy bog. I could hear the blackbirds chirping calls, but I could not see them. Finally a couple came out from the dried weathered cattails. They either got tired of waiting for me to go away, or they decided I wasn't much of a threat. Even with that, they were not very cooperative. They would not let me get close, and if I did their beautiful red wings were not visible. I took a few pictures of a frog and some other birds and finally gave up and returned to my car.

As soon as I started up the engine, half a dozen male Red-wings flew over me and landed on the tall grasses in front of me. . . . so I went back out! They couldn't get rid of me that easily. . . . and so we had our truce . . and they let me get a couple decent shots of them, but they still seemed to have a chip on their shoulders!

How do you say their name? My mom grew up in Boston and so the word winged is a two syllable word! Even though I grew up in Ohio where we say winged with just one syllable, I always say it the way my mom would want to hear it . . . and I ALWAYS think of her! ♥
