This shows a front and side view of a couple of smokeless Dutchmans pipe flowers in Florida. They look pretty sexy on a duvet cover but that is understandable when you learn the background of their other name, birthwort. "Birthwort" (e.g. European birthwort A. clematitis) refers to these species' flower shape, resembling a birth canal. The scientific name Aristolochia was developed from Ancient Greek aristos ("best" + locheia ("childbirth" or "childbed"), relating to its known ancient use in childbirth. The Roman orator Cicero records that the plant was named for a Greek man, Aristolochos, who learned from a dream that it was an antidote for snake bites. "Dutchman's pipe" and "pipevine" (e.g. common pipevine, A. durior) are an allusion to old-fashioned meerschaum pipes at one time common in the Netherlands and northern Germany. Aristolochia ( birthwort, pipevine or Dutchman's pipe) is a large, widespread plant genus with over 500 species. These flowers have a specialized pollination mechanism. The plants have a strong aroma to attract insects. The inner part of the perianth tube is covered with hairs, acting as a fly-trap. These hairs then wither to release the fly, covered with pollen. Considered among the world's weirdest flowers, the Brazilian Dutchman's pipe, aristolochea gigantea or giant pelican plant, gives off a foul odor and is a danger to certain butterflies.

This is a somewhat bizarre but beautiful plant which always stops me in my tracks when I come across it - It is grown as a tender annual in the UK.
