Description
Two American White Pelicans
I recently discovered this image in my archives for a blog I was writing about Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. I remember watching these two beautiful American White Pelicans grooming themselves from the blind near the refuge center, while other pelicans behind them were landing.
These pelicans are nearly as long as the trumpeter swan while their wing span is second only to the Condor. As opposed to the brown pelican, the American White Pelican does not dive for its food, but rather eats while swimming, taking in up to 4 lbs of food per day. When their wings are spread out, there are black flight feathers on the wings that aren't visible except when the wing is outstretched in flight or as in another photo I have of the one pelican on the right with one wing outspread to dry.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
