Description
This is a photo I took of my paternal grandmother, Paulinka. It was her 94th birthday. She was living in an extended care facility and my mother, father and I had gone to visit her. We had taken her cards and fresh fruit and she had made a great effort to show appreciation for the festivities. However, at one point, as we were all laughing and chatting away, I realized she had gone quiet. I glanced over and caught her in this moment. The look in her eyes says it all. Sandi, thank you for sharing this beautiful portrait. I've just spent some time reading all the wonderful comments, you've really touched people with this lovely shot. I think that I agree with Vadim, that at the moment of this shot your grandmother was dwelling on another time.
Zoetermeer - Netherlands
Just stumbled over your grandmother once more....had to shed her beauty over the viewers again !!
New Brunswick, NJ - United States
Outstanding portrait! There are so much emotions and at the same time so much of unspoken story, probably the story that was carried through the long-long road, called life... Her eyes show that she is not in the current moment maybe in past, maybe in the future but definitely not in the present...
Whitesville, NY - United States
Oh Sandi, what treasure. The long stare of a lifetime lived can weigh so much. She's a lucky woman to have family who care so much for her and a grand daughter with a heart sensitive enough to recognize what she is seeing. This is so much more than a photograph.
Vail, AZ - United States
Being trapped in an aging body can be the most challenging thing we face as a human being, Sandi....once one reaches age 45 or so, life seems to go in fast forward mode. Five, then ten year blocks of time go by like just a year in younger days. All of the sudden you reach retirement age and in a blink, way beyond!......FAV
Sandi Mikuse replied:
Oh isn't that so true, Jerry! When you are young you feel as though you have forever, and then suddenly there is just a sliver of time left on this earth.
Columbus, OH - United States
Sandi, I have to say...this image always touches me so....I always end up with tears. I do wonder what she is thinking and feeling...maybe who she is missing? The older I get, the more I treasure those who are older than me...leading the way with grace and dignity!....fv
Sandi Mikuse replied:
Ah, I agree, Karen...I have finally reached the age where I recognize my elders for the precious and wise teachers that they are.
Minneapolis, MN - United States
She looks distressed.. I hope she has lived life well.
Sandi Mikuse replied:
Yes, I think she was distressed near the end of her life, Wayne. But I do believe she lived most of her life well!

Amazing photo! It reminded me my grand grand mother, she was living until long age as well. Though you need to submit this photo into some portrait competition - it will win!

Age has its moments, yet her look of the days that have passed make thisi photo a family treasure! My paternal grandmother lived to be 100....much joys mixed with many sorrows-but she lived a full life! Thank you for sharing a precious piece of your life! VF

You captured and pensive and sad moment in this lady's face, Sandi. I love this, reminds me of my mother, in a sad way of course. f/l
Sandi Mikuse replied:
Ah, Karen, I am so sorry it reminds you of your mother in a sad way...it is true, though, our parents do reach this stage in life and for us, their children, it is very sad. Sandi. You have captured a moment of reflective memory. No one ever knows what is behind the eyes. Many would not have taken this photo, especially of a loved one. That shows your talent as a photographer to make the shot. L/f
