Firefighters
This is a unique moment that I made through a broken out window. If I had been in the building my lens would have steamed up.
I do not talk much about my days as a firefighter, but I think this photograph explains much about that.
You see, fighting fires is like hell on earth, and being a firefighter taught me much about my faith. When you go into a burning house, it is very hot and very smoky, visibility is very minimal that you have to feel your way around.
The steam from the firehose makes it very uncomfortable, and you feel totally out of control other that what you are trained to do.
Not only do you need to have deep trust in your partner that you go in with, but you learn to have trust that God is protecting you. To me it is better to have God, than not have God, and I don't know how the firefighters who did not believe in God did it.
As important as this work was towards saving life and property, - one life lost is too many - It pales I think to the impact I am making today with my pictures and the Catholic Apostolate that I co-founded ... only because the reach of people is much larger, thankfully, than the numbers of people caught in an emergency fire situation.
So, although I have many pictures of the fire service, this is the one image that tells the story for me about what it is about, and what it means, to be a firefighter.
