Description
Tree Swallows are a common spring and summertime sight in the Virginia Shenandoah Valley and the surrounding hills and mountains. They are incredibly graceful and acrobatic in flight, and on sunny days, their steely blue-gray backs shine with blue and purple iridescence. Tree Swallows nest in tree cavities; they also readily take up residence in nest boxes. I captured this image in mid-April, along a trail at Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville, Virginia. He was sitting on an old wire fence, and while he patiently allowed me to take several photographs, I think he was anxious for me to move along... away from the birdhouse he had claimed as the new spring/summer family home, mounted on an old post a few feet away.
