Description
Trajan Column and Remains of Basilica Ulpia Rome Italy by Debra Martz
In 113AD this triumphal column was built to commemorate Emperor Trajan’s victory over the Dacians. The Spiraling Bas Relief from bottom to top tells the story of the entire campaign. But you won't see a statue at the top of the emperor himself because in 1587 Pope Sixtus V set one of Rome's patron saints, St. Peter, there instead. The columns are of the remains of the Basilica Ulpia in the Trajan Forum.
The domed churches on either side were built 145 years apart; Santa Maria di Loreto to the left was built in the 16th century and to the right Ss. Nome di Maria (The Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary) was completed in the early 18th century around 1736.
