Description
Fiery skipper butterflies (Hylephila phyleus) vie for position on a small cluster of lantana blossoms in San Rafael, California during a sunny October afternoon.
The fiery skipper is of the family Hesperiidae and is approximately one inch (2.5 cm) in length. Its range extends from Argentina and Chile to North America. They are frequently seen near lawns and urban areas in California.
The lantana (Spanish flag) plant is native to tropical regions in North and South America and Africa. They are drought-tolerant and their colorful flower clusters (umbels) attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Because of their very rapid, almost erratic flight patterns, I've found fiery skipper butterflies are quite a challenge to photograph, especially in flight. This image is truly a gift from God.
