I love taking an "OK" photograph and working it into something different and (I hope) more exciting. When I took the source photo from which "The Trees" was created, I was taken by how neat and orderly the forest looked... most of the tree trunks were straight and upright, not branching out until quite a way up from the ground; and the forest floor, itself, was largely free of undergrowth... nature, but almost unnaturally clean and orderly. The more I looked at the image, the more I thought it might be interesting to distill it down to its basics... the strong vertical lines of the bare trunks, extending and fading into the distance. In this case, the color in the original was really a bit of a distraction, so conversion to grayscale seemed to be a logical first step. From there, experimenting with brightness, contrast, highlight, shadow and textures, and a final addition of a color-tinted overlay resulted in what you see here. I like the texture and depth. I think it's interesting that I sometimes see "dark on light" and sometimes see "light on dark." Regardless, I think "The Trees" works really well on the wall, as a shower curtain, a throw pillow, a tote bag.....
