Description
The Palace Saloon on the cornerof Centre and 2nd Streets in Fernandina Beach, Florida is the oldest bar in the state. Built in 1878, the Prescott Building was originally a haberdashery. It was purchased in 1903 by Louis Hirth who asked his old friend Adolphus Busch (Anheiser Bush fame) to help with the design and construction of the bar.
Their design featured inlaid mosaic tile floors, embossed tin ceilings, hand carved mahogany undraped famale fixtures. a 40 foot bar lit with gas lamps and walls painted with six commissioned murals.
In it's heyday, Fernandina Beach was one of the busiest ports in the south. Of the 20 bars in the town at the time, The Palace Saloon was known as the "Shipcaptains Bar."
