Description
Anyone following my photography for a time knows I’m rather partial to this old barn near my home in Lassen County California, USA. I’ve managed to capture images of it in all seasons and different conditions. Normally, I’m shooting it at a telephoto focal length as it sits a bit off the road on private property. If I can ever find the owner I will try to get permission to access the property to get a closer photo under the stars and light painting it as I have many of my other night images. However, on this particular summer evening there was about 15 minutes of “astro darkness†between the evening twilight and the rise of an 85% illuminated moon. While my current gear doesn’t allow shooting the stars at telephoto focal lengths, I figured a wide angle shot could still work. I used my normal method of “stacking†multiple frames of the sky to reduce digital “noise†and captured my sky frames during those precious few minutes of dark sky. I then left the camera in place until the moon was a few degrees up in the sky and, using its illumination, captured a single long exposure of the barn and foreground. All the images were then blended in post production for the final image. While I still hope to get a night image with the barn very dominant in the frame one day, I like it as a smaller element sort of anchoring an evening “rural America†scene.
Bonus: I got to listen to two packs of coyotes trying to outdo each other at yelping across the Honey Lake Valley.
