Description
One doesn’t have to spend much time in the four Gospels, reading the words and teachings of Jesus, to realize that He talked about children a lot.
And it wasn’t just figurative speech, story telling in the way that seminar and seminary speakers give today – a funny little joke to illustrate something, but not really meaning anything of import. No, Jesus not only spoke of and about children, He also spent time with them – no doubt speaking with and to them as well.
For some reason, Jesus found it incredibly important to impress upon His disciples, which include those of us who listen and talk to Him today, that they needed to be like children. How? What is it about children that Jesus wants us to see, study, and emulate?
Innocence comes immediately to mind – innocence being generally something, in our chic and savvy society, considered to belong to the naive and stupid. But given that Jesus doesn’t want His children to be naive and stupid, He must want us to look for something else, something deeper.
What is there about innocence that is so beautiful? Innocence is humble, because it knows that it is weak, and humility blocks us from the arrogance (which many mistake to be confidence) that keeps us from listening to Christ’s words, not to mention listening to the people around us as they share their hopes, anxieties, fears, thoughts, wondering, questions, and wisdom.
Innocence is also accepting – trusting that the adults placed in a child’s life are decent, good people (which most parents are). In watching the trust that a young child has for his or her mother or father, we see the trust that God wants us to place in Him, our Father.
There is much to ponder, many questions to ask, many observations to make. But it all starts with becoming as a little child . . .
