Title
The Food Chain With Description
Artist
Gerald Strine
Medium
Drawing - Graphite On Bristol Paper
Description
This drawing represents the food chain of which we are all apart of. Whether we choose to have other people raise our meat and vegetables or we partake directly by harvesting our own meat and growing our own vegetables we are all interconnected. In this drawing the trees drop leaves and acorns, the acorns feed the deer, the deer is then eaten by the coyote, the coyote leaves the hide, bone, and meat scraps which feed other animals and helps enrich the soil. The enriched soil feeds the trees, the trees leaf-litter feeds the mushrooms, snail and cricket, the cricket is eaten by the mouse, the mouse is food for the snake, and the snake could feed hawks, owls, raccoons, skunks, foxes, etc. The shotgun shell represents man who uses this tool to harvest animals in the food chain for his table rather than buying his meat from unknown, questionable, third parties. The shotgun shell could have been replaced by the symbol of a Styrofoam fast food container, but that is to sad for my art.

Yes, the skull is brilliant and makes the whole picture. It is sometimes difficult to know what to leave out mentioning ! After I had gone away from this, I was still thinking about it and wondering if I should have said how much I liked that little snail looking down from his vantage point on top of the mushroom! And now, coming back this morning, I see also that this work has quite rightly been recognized in a competition, and I am so happy to see that !!

Thank you Jane for spending a moment to really LOOK at this work my favorite part is the deer skull I used the skull of an eight point buck I harvested with my bow for the model he helped feed my family over the winter!

An extraordinary amount of thought and detail has gone into this work. I have to look really carefully to keep uncovering things! It is clever because it all feels partially hidden at first glance which it would be. Love the mice and snake hovering there, and the way the leaves make patterns. It is actually like looking into a patterned leafy carpet and then noticing everything on the forest floor! Wonderful drawing !! v/f
